«Uncharted» “I did not tell half of what I saw for I knew I would not be believed…” Marco Polo on his deathbed, 1324 At 330ft (100m) tall, this monster waterfall sits at the end of a deep canyon that it helped to carve. The canyon walls tower an additional 660-990ft/200-300m above the waterfall. My geologist friends tell me the layers of rock are quartzite, sandstone that was converted into quartzite through heating and pressure usually related to tectonic compression within orogenic belts. When sandstone is cemented to quartzite, the individual quartz grains recrystallize along with the former cementing material to form an interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals, usually white or grey colored. The canyon walls around this waterfall are sheltered from direct sun 99% of the year, it is mostly always dark out there, mossy and very slippery. The dark-colored waters are a trademark of this region. Some nicknamed it “tea-colored”, some even compare it to a “cola” drink in terms of darkness...
